Sign of what sort of intelligence?

My 14 year old is highly artistic, but has always had lackluster grades (more due to a lack of effort than a lack of ability). Recently, we discovered something pretty wild. While "Find the Picture" things like Where's Waldo take him a decent amount of time to do, he's astounding at the What's Different? things they have where they show two pictures with a specific number of things changed. Tonight, he did an "Expert" level puzzle from Time Magazine in less than 2 minutes. There were 10 differences. And this was not a fluke. He did another 6 in less than 10 minutes.

My husband and I were talking and we think this has to be a sign of some kind of intelligence, but we aren't certain which one it would be. Would it be visual or perhaps something else? My husband is also highly artistic, but can't do the What's Different? puzzles worth squat (although he can kill on some Where's Waldo?).

Any assistance would be highly appreciated, particularly since we want to encourage him to develop his abilities.
