Shows with female leads that were/are successful to both genders.

I've been wanting to post this for quite some time, and the recent Spider-Girl thread in the MAA forums encouraged me to do so now.

Generally, the idea that the networks hold are that having a cartoon with a female lead would prevent many male viewers from tuning in. But that hasn't prevented some shows of that nature from succeeding.

What shows are you aware of that have found success? So far I'm aware of:

1. Powerpuff Girls- Not only was it successful in getting viewership from both genders, but it was easily Cartoon Network's hit toon.

2. Kim Possible- This cartoon also was successful. Not only was it one of the few cartoons to reach the 65 episode mark this decade, it also went beyond it for 20 more episode.

I don't think it's more about shows with sole female leads. Though you could maybe make the argument for X-Men Evolution, since Rogue got waaaaay more screentime than any of the others!

Hey, was the Lilo & Stitch series a success? I didn't hang around on forums back then....

I'd say that W.I.T.C.H. would fit into the this category. I've been to the W.I.T.C.H. forum at TV.com and nearly half of the regular posters on it were male.

Well W.I.T.C.h was targeting boys in america given that it aired on Jetix which really was much girl oriented. You could say the same for Oban Star racers but it never really got popular eben for Jetix.

Even though i hated the show would totally Spies count?

Jem from all the way back in the 80s. I never really watched it and I'm not sure how popular it was, but I've heard it mentioned a few times in recent years so it must've at least been popular enough for people to remember it.

Winx Club as well. Even though I haven't heard that many good things about it it certainly seems popular.

Do you mean two more movies as in the two related to the television series (the pilot Stitch the Movie and the series finale Leroy & Stitch)?

Because there was also "Lilo & Stitch 2" which came out during the run of the series (but obviously takes place before).

Robin was clearly the lead character/headliner of the Teen Titans.

Anyways, difficult to think of a show where the female was the lead and she was able to stand on her own. W.I.T.C.H. I think fits the bill best, but even then I heard it had a rule that every episode had to start out with Caleb doing 'something' to keep the boys watching.

That might have been true in season 1 (heck the first episode started with Caleb "doing something" before cutting to the girls) but in season 2 there were a lot of episodes where he was pushed to the side or not seen at all because there was nothing a regular non-powered guy like him could do against what the girls were facing.

You guys all the good ones, and the ones that come to mind. I love most of these shows, W.I.T.C.H., Winx Club, and the horal grail in anime Sailor Moon. As well as the Powerpuff Girls, Kim Possible, even going as far back as Jem, they were all awesome shows. Surprisingly most of them are non anime, so they did is the hard way without fan service.

Any guys like Lucky Star, or KON!, I like them, I don't know if it is popular with the males pursay.

Most if not all of the shows mentioned provided stuff that boys can enjoy, it brought action and in some cases fan service for the guys, female role models and style for girls, and great story telling for all.

I thought stories that revolve with female characters can be much more deeper than an typical male action shows. Macho characters like Rambo, He Man, are not going to talk about their feelings.

A reason why Cinderella is one of my favorite stories, very underrated it can be as deep and dramatic as Romeo and Juliet if it wanted to be, I would love if they made an animated adaption of the story a series or movie that gives a more deeper story, it always had great protential with Cinderella's father death, the kingdom in termoil, and the disfunction of Cinderella's step family. I have purposed in the past they make a anime series about it. Ideas I have is the kingdom is at war which provides an additional story line, and gives the Prince something to do, also my backstory idea of Cinderella and one of her step sisters used to be best friends when Cinderella's father was alive.

That's right. It's been a while since I've seen Season 2 so I couldn't quite remember if they were still doing the 'Caleb opening' then.

I liked Lucky Star. It was a very amusing slice of life show that was very easy to get into.
