Here's driver and passenger water bottle holders made from Profile bicycle holders, threaded rod, and odd clamps I had lying around. Does the job just fine.

why do you think it would any more dangerous tham wrapping your
crotch around a 5 or 6 gal gas tank?

Because that 5-6 gallon gas tank is specifically made to hold gasoline, deal with the pressures of expansion of fumes, deal with sliding in sideways etc etc.

A plastic jerry jug tossed into a saddle bag just isn't the same thing. It just sounds dangerous to me.

I had an old bottle with a carrier, I made an aluminum hook that is sewn in the carrier and hang it in the saddlebag guard bag.
