shoulder blade pain when breathing?????

about a week or so ago i got sick and felt like i had a fever and a bad cough, runny nose and all that jazz. i took medicine and over about 3-4 days i started to feel better but my cough still didn't improve. as time went on it seemed i was hurting myself coughing under and around my right shoulder blade area. this being because i would constantly cover my mouth and the cough was pretty bad, wheezing and all. its been about a week, maybe longer since and still my back hurts. it hurts when i lay a certain way or put too much pressure on it laying down. it hurts when i laugh, blow my nose, sneeze, move a certain way, breath in deeply et cetera. i went to the doctor worried because my mother had a problem with a blood clot in her lungs before and they told me because of my age and the fact i wasn't on birth control it doesn't seem likely. they said it seemed as though i pulled a muscle. but the pain seems to be getting more severe, not better. also, it seems to hurt under my right breast a bit as well when i take deep breaths and that... im not sure if its just feeling this way because im not letting it heal since i need to move around a lot and i keep coughing up flem or if i really need to get it checked out... any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Hey pettle,

Sorry to hear you're sick, and about your pain. It sounds as though you bruised a rib or some tissue in your back from the coughing. That has definitely happened to me before as well. My guess is that you caught a cold virus in your nose and it traveled down to your lungs, giving you a bit of a viral bronchitis, and unfortunately unless that cough stops, that pain will persist. Any cough med that is an expectorant will help you get that phlegm up quicker, and might help to clear the pathogen out, and advil or ibuprophen should help with the ache, but if you are still sick and feel as though you are getting worse I'd go back to the doc. Let me know how it goes!
