Should you tell a 7 year old child their father is in jail?

My 28 year old brother went to jail and will be in the city jail for 3 months. They told his daughter he was out on vacation for work. I feel she should know where he father is not lie to her especially since she's old enough to understand. He went to jail for something he did when he got drunk. I think my brother should tell his child when he gets out but my family said they won't ever tell her what happened. FYI: he's gone to jail 1 more time before this and they also lied to her about it. Can anyone give me ideas on what they think should happen?
 
The child has no reason to know. She is not old enough to understand....she looks up to her father and this would destroy her image of him, He is her protector and to know that he is not invincible would only hurt her. She will not benefit from knowing in any way so let her innocence and idealistic image of her father remain intact.
