Should you get a choice of joining the army for a few years instead of going to prison?

I'm 22 and am getting sentenced for GBH this week. I thought about joining the army but didn't do it but would like to now to try and do something good. I remember seeing a programme on TV about people who had been in trouble getting army training but I was told I have no chance. Wouldn't it be better to get me to do something I'd probably be good at instead of sending me to prison for this
