should we use dog boots this summer on hikes?

My husband and I are planning on taking our two dogs Beethoven and Buddy a 2 year old black lab and a 1 year old yellow lab on hikes this summer over some rugged and possably slick terrain and I was wondering if we should use the dog boots that cover the dogs paws to keep them from getting thorns in their paws or cutting the pads of their paws on sharp rocks. Last year we took the dogs out for one hike and it was on a trail that was pretty clear. We use the gentle leaders on the dogs to keep them walking beside us. This summer however Buddy will have his service dog in training vest as my husband is no longer able to do things as well as he used to do things like walking long distances or picking things up when he drops them.
