Should we give our money to Haiti during a financial crisis?

We just borrowed $700B from China just so the entire world could prevent the Great Depression. The entire worlds economy would have completely collapsed had the U.S. not begged and received $700B from China. In other words we would be doing business an entirely different way. In fact economists are predicting that the U.S. can not sustain this type of borrowing to bail out the economy over the long term.

Everytime there is a major disaster the U.S. comes to the aid to whichever country it is and bails it out....using money they don't have.....money they borrowed from China to prevent world economic collapse. Where was the rest of the world during Hurricane Katrina and the New Orleans disaster? Did China help us out? The answer is no. China does not give away any "free" money. Where is China during this Haitian disaster? We don't know because in the news right now they are involved in hacking into the email accounts of Human Rights activists.

My question to you is when does it stop? When does the U.S. stop wasting money they don't have by giving it away to nations that are a waste of time to give aid to. The U.S. will never EVER receive any form of benefits for helping Haiti. Helping Haiti will only hurt Americans by causing Americans to borrow more money from China to make up for the money that they were supposed to be spending on their economy.

as the only remaining super power....the USA has a moral obligation to help Haiti.

and conservatives (like u and fsfa above) wonder why McCain only got 3% of the black vote in Nov 2008 ???

your display of ignorance & bigotry only steers more and more immigrants and minorities to the left.

where was your outrage when GWB sent tsunami relief?....or when GWB send AIDS relief to africa?...or when GWB sent earthquake relief to china and india?

u are once again demonstrating the hypocrisy of the phrase 'compassionate conservatism'

I totally agree with you. Haiti was a scourge on this side of the earth before and it will be after. I don't see why we should go into more debt to fund a wasted land.

No we cant afford to give away tax dollars any more, if people want to privately donate thats fine, we need to balance the budget not tax and spend and borrow and spend

As private citizens yes. The government no.

James Madison on AID to HAITIAN REFUGEES (1794)

No one can deny the overwhelming need of the Haitian refugees who have been affected by the devastating earthquake. May our hearts, prayers and money speedily aid of them.

With that said, it was interesting to note that in 1794, the US Congress was faced with this very same dilemma, as to what exactly the role of the federal government was in instances such as these--specifically with regards to HAITI. The following is from the 1st session of the 3rd Congress when Madison led votes against granting assistance to French refugees from the Haitian revolution in 1794.

Annals of Congress, House of Representatives, 3rd Congress, 1st Session, page 170 (1794-01-10) [3]. The Annals summarize speeches in the third person, with the actual text of Madison's quote as follows:

"Mr. Madison wished to relieve the sufferers, but was afraid of establishing a dangerous precedent, which might hereafter be perverted to the countenance of purposes very different from those of charity. He acknowledged, for his own part, that he could not undertake to lay his finger on that article in the Federal Constitution which granted a right of Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents."

The expense in question was for French refugees from the Haitian Revolution.

This is the instance which gave rise to Madison's famous quote:

"I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents."

Please note that the States could also help refugees, and that the Constitution could be amended if such a constitutional power was deemd worthy.
