Should there be a law against lying to get elected?

Should there be a law against distorting the truth to get elected?
In this modern age of instant fact check, should candidates who lie or distort the truth be prosecuted when proven to have done so?
Why don't perjury laws apply here, isn't this a more important arena than in a courtroom.
Maybe even as treason as these acts criminally effect the lives of millions here and worldwide?
Didn't we bring Saddam Hussein to a world Tribunal when his deceptions cost the lives of innocents?
 
To the contrary, the law insulates politicians from liability if they lie. It's called the First Amendment and what it really means is the Founders trusted us as voters to sort out the truth from the lies.
 
Lying goes hand and hand with being a politician, I don't know of any that has not lied to get where they are, not saying that it is right but it is the way it is.They are humans first and politicians second, meaning they have plenty of skeletons in their closets and will do anything to keep the public from finding out.That's a good thought you have, but it's not likely to ever happen.
