Should there be a law against distorting the truth to get elected?

In this modern age of instant fact check, should candidates who lie or distort the truth be prosecuted when proven to have done so?
Why don't perjury laws apply here, isn't this a more important arena than in a courtroom.
Maybe even as treason as these acts criminally effect the lives of millions here and worldwide?
Didn't we bring Saddam Hussein to a world Tribunal when his deceptions caused the lives of innocents?
 
There is, it is called Slander. But our judicial and political systems are too corrupt to pursue legal remedies in order to clean up those election campaign practices.
