Should the restaurant industry do away with the whole working for tips system?

because it's very corrupt, servers often make more money than people who go to college for 8 years, it's completely ridiculous that servers can make 40 dollars an hour and the back of the house only makes 7 and there's also the tax issue, servers NEVER claim what they actually make, they often claim a much lower number so they won't have to pay as much in taxes,

I agree that it's corrupt. But I think it should stay. In fact, I think they should expand it. Doctors, sales clerks, and elected officials should work for tips too.

How many times have you had a doctor be rude to you, not answer all your questions, and not spend nearly enough time on your problems? How often have you been ignored by the grocery clerk, or watched the stock boy you want to ask for help texting on his cell phone instead of helping customers? How often do you complain about your elected officials misusing funds, lying about everything, and engaging in activities that would land you in jail?

And yet all of them get paid exactly the same, whether we're happy with them or not.

I like being able to tell at least one person in the world how well they treated me, in a way they understand. You were friendly and helpful, and got me what I wanted? Big tip. You were rude and ignored me? No tip. Easy for the wait staff to tell if I'm happy or not.

Wish other professions were hit where it hurts when they suck at their jobs.

They do not change anything else why change this?
I say keep it..shows you who is CHEAP ...;)

you go thru these dine out posts..you always see one or two i didnt have the money to leave a tip ahh but you had the money to eat out?well i am on tight budget..well i am sorry but the waitress is also shes probably having to feed a kid on the quarter tip you left...
you do a good service to people you deserve to be rewarded..raven is correct let's change this to govt things also!

by the way you are obviously wrong about them getting more then some college educated people..this past yr tips have fallen heavily ..and not half as many people are going to the nice places to eat.we live in fla and the tourist industry is way down.
so it must be where you live

where is it you live they are doing so well?or are you assuming?

I have to agree with Raven. Too much bad service and corrupt people out there. Tips are an easy way for a company to weed out the incompetent individuals not doing their jobs.

From what I have been told restaurants cannot afford to pay servers minimum wage.Their livelyhood depends on their tips.

That would force restaurants to pay the servers a decent hourly wage which would drive the cost of your meal up to cover it. Either way you are going to pay. So what if a server makes more than a college grad, maybe that tells you something...

i work in a restaurant, and i don't get tips

theres no tipping in australia, and its never caused huge problems. why not?

I believe that the servers should be paid a fair wage and that tipping should be banned. Here's why!

Senario 1.
I go to Denny's. Order dinner. Server takes the order, brings drink, brings salad, brings dinner, brings check. Bill is $8.00. At 20% tip, the server gets $1.60

Senario 2.
I go to Outback. Same service as above. Bill is $20.00. Server gets $4.00

Senario 3.
I go to Mortons. Bill is $80.00. Server gets $16.00 tip.

That is 10 times more than the server at Denny's for the exact same amount of work. Why cant restaurants build in the cost of their help? Why should they when they have their customers paying their labor. It also depends on the popularity of the restaurant. At the end of the day, the server at Denny's may actually out earn someone at a less busy but more expensive restaurant. Bottom line- put the labor costs into the menu price and pay the people a fair wage for the work provided.

I hate tipping, it's so awkward and I never feel like I've given enough. Just get rid of them and jack up food prices 15%-20%.
