Should people have the choice of a public option for health care?

Why is the right unwilling to let people make this choice themselves? Why do they want to make sure people do not have this choice?

If the government really is terrible at everything, then people will choose private plans. If not, they'll choose the public one.

So why not let the people decide what they want?
