Should MPs be banned from seeking election immediately after resigning their seat?

David Davis has forced a by-election in his Haltemprice and Howden constituency, where he will be defending a majority of over 5,000.

This by-election is estimated to cost taxpayers a massive £75,000 - not to mention the huge sums that will be spent by the candidate(s).

This is a shocking misuse of public funds and I think that MPs should be barred from standing as candidates in any by-elections that they have caused by resigning?

Do you agree?
Plank - I understood that he will be standing as a Conservative candidate. Cameron has already said he will be campaigning for him at the time.
I understand people's concerns about the threat to Civil Liberties and, if it had been someone with the recognised integrity of Gwyneth Dunwoody or Chris Smith, then I wouldn't feel so angered by it. However, my concern is that, if this is allowed to go on, it could start a trend of self-serving publicity hounds to resign their seats on some "moral stand" or other.

Do you think it would never happen? Well, just imagine the thrill that the likes of Frank Field or George Galloway would get from being able to grab the limelight once again - without having to crawl around on the floor with Rula Lenska!!
