...their own pictures? This is a disturbing topic. I read a case from NJ where a 14 year old girl could spend something like 30 years in prison for posting her own pictures and register as a sex offender.

One of the goals of preventing such material from being created is the concern that it would fuel dangerous and illegal activities of sexual predators, and thus protect a future victim. But given the the sheer amount of "legal" 18+ pornography on the web, which no doubt could fuel sexual predators attracted to minor teens, does it do little more than ruin the life of a kid who made this mistake?

I think state and local governments need to come up with new laws to address this issue.
Again, disturbing and distasteful topic, but a pertinent one.
 
Yes, this is an area of law that is lacking in common sense. I've heard several stories about "sexting," which is young folks sending nude photos of themselves to their friends, using their camera phones. That is child pornography under the law.
