But yeah, anyways, do you think they should come out to their classes? Like keep a picture of their partner on their desk or mention something about being queer at the beginning of the year or when a big LGBTQ issue comes up in the media or whatever? Would it have helped you in high school to have a role model like that?
@hobgoblin Of course it was not my intent to be offensive. I personally identify as queer, or, if the company I'm with doesn't get it, a lesbian for the sake of simplicity. It can be used on a more individual basis or as a more inclusive umbrella term for the LGBT community. Look up 'queer theory' if you're interested.
Anyways though, I definitely agree that being out would open one up to discrimination but there ARE laws in place to protect against discrimination against sexual orientation in many places which makes it safer. If all professionals want to stay in the closet that isn't doing much to normalize being queer.
As for if it was me, I'm not sure. I'm currently in university to become a teacher and its something I've thought a lot about.
