Should I use sand to help loosen up my veggie garden soil?

I live in Fort Worth, Tx and I started a veggie garden with tomatoes, zucchini, okra, basil, and rosemary. The soil has been covered with bermuda grass for as long as the house has been here (20 years) and it was very gummy, compact and clay-like after it rained recently.

Should I incorporate sand somehow to improve the drainage and overall quality of my soil? I just don't want my plants dieing because of poor drainage or root rot.

If using sand is a good option, how exactly do I apply it?
Do I have to dig up all my plants that have already been there a week and a half if I want this to go right? The okra and zucchini plants are already getting bigger. If I want to get all the bermuda roots out of this garden, will I have to dig out the plants? (Please say no.)

the use of compost and cow or chicken manure should help also a dusting of lime because compost and manure upsets the soil ph dig them in well and leave for 3/4 weeks also gypsum or crushed lime stone helps breakdown clay

rototill the ground before starting the garden -mix some good compost into the current soil. install a drip system & begin planting. mulch the garden well.
