Should I upgrade?

I have 6100 and 4100 receivers. I was watching one of those things about "how to use your receiver" (it was the only thing on) and the guide looked so much better. I distain the guide on the 6100, I much prefer the one like on the 4100 but the 4100 seems very sluggish, but not nearly as sluggish as say a Motorola Star Choice box. Is it time to upgrade my old 6100? Nothing looks right with it, it's like the EPG has to be upscaled to fit my LCD but it looks horrible and pixelated. The only way to avoid this is putting big black bars on everything which I simply do not want.

Should I upgrade to watch the EPG in HD? , That should have been your question probably. And the anwser is obvious. You should!!! But unfortunaelly in your case there is no possible solution , at least so far. Maybe in a 100 years, humans cientists, will be able to upgrade human brains on demand , but rest assure it will not be covered by Health Canada lol lol lol lol.

Let me inform you , that even the so called HD Channels , are not so HD as BEV claims. You will see lots of pixelation , compresion artifacts and so (depending on your display hardware) soooo To Upgrade or not to Upgrade, That is your question. I am about to upgrade my self to HD OTA using my UHF set up and give up on watching anything HD on BEV.

Ohhh but the EPG? , that is something that YOU must watch in HD!!!! lol lol lol. Unbeleivable that the milk man has to get up very early every morning to milk the cow so you can have breakfast , lol lol lol.

Moderators , I wonder if after this jokes you will banned me forever? lol lol lol After so many years in Cuba without internet , if a website bans me , I guess I will not be missing to much eh? lol lol lol lol. My user name should have been headache or PITA instead of trafficinfo lol lol lol.

I appreciate your sarcasm. I've just always noticed that a lot of things look quite bad on the screen. I guess I'm not asking if I should upgrade, I'm really more asking if it's normal that it looks quite bad on the screen even if I select high resolution.

The HD service is not perfect, but it's not that bad either. I enjoy watching most of my TV on HD only. I have said it before and I will say it again, the problem is that 1/2 the people out there want more HD channels and 1/2 the people out there want better quality. I don't think that any supplier is better than the other right now either.

the sad part of the story is that we more likely will have to wait to at least the second half of 2009 for Nimiq 5 to be launched and expect more bandwith be available for our bit-starved HD programming. even the SD PPV movies look horrible and I would NOT recommend anyone to watch those unless you were my enemy of course jajajaja. I would rather rent a DVD. All that said BEV appears to be the lesser of the evils out there. Rogers HD channels PQ are outstanding but their HD PVR is years old , outdated and lack so many features. That pulled the trigger for me.

PQ is always related to your particular hardware (display technology, cables and so on). The EPG or the Weather channel in my opinion are not (like we say in spanish) the chicken of the rice with chicken. they are not that important. you just glance at them for a few seconds to get your info and move on to your favorite show or leave home. They do not bother me at all. But a PPV movie or event either SD or HD , that is another story.

For an objective comparison to be carried out you will need two identical TV sets with equal cables and receiving equipment , something that end-users can not do very easily. At the end of the day most end-user trust blindly what their TV providers CSR tells them and then when the sit for the first time in front of their TV's they realize that it is a totally different ballgame.

If I were you I would stay with your current hardware. I do not think it is worth the upgrade unless you want extra features like PVR, 2 tunners for a second 2 tv or PIP.

FWIW, I like the EPG on my 9200... it might be worth upgrading to the 9200 or the current 9242 PVR receivers... (You cannot help but love a PVR :) )

You can set the EPG to show up to seven channels as well as giving you the program info and the video you are currently tuned to shown in a small window.

The picture is great and there is no pixellation.. I'm pretty sure the 9242 is the same as my older 9200. It's worth the upgrade. Below is an actual screen capture from my 9200. It looks a LOT better on my 42" plasma.

Definitely, upgrade to a 9200 or 9242. EV is currently giving $300 credits on 9242s for existing customers or 1 year free rental under certain circumstances.

The 9200/9242 have a great looking guide, all 8 days of it, and great HD/SD picture quality as well. The 9200 will beat any SD receiver easily for picture quality on SD channels. and the 6000/6100 on all channels. Then there is the 200 hours or so of SD recording, more than enough for even avid TV viewers. HD recording is only 25-30 hr, just so so, but external drive support is coming for the 9242. The 9242 is quite speedy as well. The 9200 is no slouch either. Some people report slow channel changes on both receivers but I have yet to experience the problem on the 9242 and the 9200 is usually fast enough.

The 8 day HD guide should keep you enthralled for hours. So many programs, such little time. ;)

HOLY CRAP. That is awesome and I want to upgrade! LOL. I love that guide. :D I know it seems so insignificant but i've had difficulties with that kind of thing. I have menus and the guide fill my screen, and they look blown up and pixelated. I make it higher res and I get bars that everyone seems to hate ( I don't mind them, but my family does).

Thanks for your guys help. I really appreciate it even the comments that think I'm stupid for asking such a question... LOL

Wait... Do I have to call BEV to get the $300 credit? I checked, and neither the 4100 or the 6100 are under contract any longer. It wants me to pay 599 for the HD PVR. Do I have to sign a new 3 year? Because that is something I will not do.

Seems that most people here do not make difference between a PROMOTION and a RETENTION OFFER...

I just got off the phone with Express Vu direct sales, the departement that front line CSR's who take your call have to transfer you to to place an order for receiver. They told me that a 9242 receiver is 599$ for EXISTING CLIENTS, NO PROMOS. The 300$ credit only applies to NEW CLIENTS she says

If you purchase no need to sign a new contract...
If you rent they will ask you to sign a 1 year contract

Look at the following thread who refers to similar subject: http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=88565

If you threat to disconnect you probably will get it...if you just ask the price or say you want to buy you won't
