Should I touch up my mouldings with little gold paint?

I don't want to repaint our rooms. Just to avoid the big mess. I saw how some people have a light touch of gold paint on their mouldings. I have seen a lot would make it look cheap.

Is that a known method? Light gold paint on white mouldings?
