I'm gonna be a sophomore in high school this year and I have the option to take pre-calculus or trigonometry. I took advanced algebra last year. My 21 year old sister firmly suggested that I take trigonometry (the easier of the two classes). She told me that colleges require 4 years of mathematics classes and that if I take pre-calc, I'm going to have to take some super hard ap math class my senior year. She also said that colleges won't care weather I take pre-calc or trig my sophomore year. ALL of my friends are taking pre-calc which makes me think that if they can do it, so can I, since I know I'm pretty smart. I'm also taking AP us history which is rumored to be a very challanging class which is also why my sister recommended trig.
The problem I have, is that that I'm almost positive I'm going to have some sort of science/engineering major in college which in that case, it might be better that I take pre-calc.
So really, I'm not sure which class to take because of what colleges will say/think about which class I took. I mean if I'm going to get into a science/engineering college (like MIT), they're going to want someone who took all the advanced math classes and who seems to have an interest in math, right?
For example, say MIT has one more spot open, and two applicants. Both applicants took similar classes, etc, etc, but one person took pre-calc their sophomore year, and the other took trigonometry their sophomore year. Would this effect which person they choose? I'm just worried it might affect weather I get in to a certain school or not.
Will this decision effect my chances of getting into a better college? And is pre-calc A LOT harder that trig, like my sister says?
Thanks.
