Should I stand out and look bizarre, or fit in and look good?

I have naturally dark hair that I recently dyed black by accident (I thought it was going to end up dark brown), pale skin, and super dark eyes. I realize that whenever I have lighter or redder hair, I look less contrast-y, but I tend to fade into the background. I want to stand out but I also don't want to look like a Goth or an emo kid (I'm 20, not 14!). I do not want to look "arty", I just want to look pretty, but when I have black hair I look like I'm trying to make a statement. How can I stand out for being pretty but not for being emo or goth? (by that I mean, what hair color would help me accomplish this?)
