Should I reformat my flash drive?

I just tried to get into my flash drive to save some things in it and I couldn’t access it. It said that I had to reformat it to get in, but I don’t want to lose all of my files in it. I have one too many things that are important, including a hard-won picture of my little brother. Not to mention that it would take me weeks, if not months, to find all the information again.

Is there a way for me to reformat the flash drive so I can get into it and recover all the files? I really cannot lose them and that picture is irreplaceable.

Also, why does it want to reformate? Is it because it needs new free space or something? I checked it regularly to make sure I had enough storage space on it (it was just over a quarter full before this happened), so I don’t get why this happened.

It’s a SanDisk Cruzer Micro 2GB and I have a Windows Vista if you need to know to help.

Thanks so much!!!!!!
I already plugged it into my brother’s laptop (a Dell), but it didn’t work either.
