Should I really learn the guitar?

I used to play the saxophone, for 4 years I have, until I recently changed into a public school that has no music program.
A lot of people in the school play guitar, and I have been feeling like I need something to work on, something to do. I sort of miss having that moment when you play with other people and you feel the... the.. just that feeling! You know what I'm saying! Plus it'd be awesome to learn the guitar, I've always wanted to and it's one of those instruments that are handy to know, like the piano.
I don't really wanna play the sax because
1. it's expensive, minimum $600,
2. it's heavy to carry around
3. WHO am I going to play with? no one plays recreationally. what am I gonna do, practice in my basement for no one else but me?
My friend says learning the guitar is hard (and of this I have no doubt), but is it really THAT bad. I mean, I've played an instrument before, I have SOME knowledge of theory that is somewhat related.
