Should I pursue an academic career or media career?

Right now, I'm an upperclassman at a very prestigious school. I always intended to major in religious studies and then pursue a career as a historian of religions. However, I also enjoy media, (especially filmmaking, writing, and the creative aspect of advertising) and I have an incredible background in communications. Can one get a Phd in something like history and become some sort of creative consultant on the side? I'm just not sure if I'm fit for an 100% academic career or an 100% career in advertising (which is based on consumerism--something the ivory tower seems to frown upon).
