I plan to start learning how to develop programs for computers. I'm still getting my feet wet in this field, but I've run into a slight problem.
I would like to know if learning PHP will be a good step into the programming world? I've read around a lot and have heard that PHP will get me thinking in the right direction. With that in mind, I did more research and have found that python and perl are two very good alternative whilst perl is somewhat like php as I've heard, but php is mainly for developing web application/web designers/ etc.
I'm not much into the whole building my own site. I stick with blogs for such things. And If I have to, I usually am capable of HTML/CSS—kinda like a pastime of mine. So my question is, should PHP really get me going? Or am I better off with learning some other language?
What I'm thinking is stick with PHP and learn more about unix and shell scripting for now?
