I am 17 turning 18 in august of 09. I am in a dilemma trying to figure out whether to join the Army or the Navy. I met with a Navy recruiter and what he tells me some sweet deals but I also know he has a quota to meet. Then I met with a guy that was in the Navy but left because he didn't like having to clean, paint, etc. the ship while the sailors and marines do nothing. I am looking to be a cook or go into the medical field. I want a safe life but not something that I will be B.S.'d in either. Can someone tell me. Which branch is better and more honest and which is more suitable for me ?
They say in the Army nowadays no matter what your job is even if its pay clerks you can still get deployed to Iraq. And in the Navy, if your E-1, you'll be cleaning and polishing the ship 365 days a year.

Joining the military is a great thing for young people. The benefits go on for years after. You can get college benefits and you have preference when it comes to government jobs and mortgage loans for homes. You will get very good training and should try to get into some field that you can work in once you leave the military. There is no such thing as a safe life. You could be killed crossing the street. The medical field is a great field to select and the Navy is a good service. You may even be stationed somewhere like San Diego or even Hawaii. I just completed nearly 20 years with the US government. The work was challenging and I was sent all over the world. My advise to you is go for it.

Navy- Boring, Lonely if not a Corpsman(which you should pursue)

Army- You spend days sitting at bases and going on patrols.

For medicine defiantly Navy. Chances are you will become a Corpsman and work with the Marines. Which is a spectacular experience.
