Should I have my Engine Swapped or Rebuild? 1999 Ford Escort?

I have a 1999 Ford Escort SE 2.0 L, and about a year ago, it broke down, and upon having it diagnosed, they said lost compression in cyl's one and four. (not sure what they even tested) they wanted $1000 just to find out if the pistons were damaged and then would know if it was worth fixing or just needed a new engine, I declined as it had 160,000 and I hate our ford dealership. So I garaged it and have been driving the other car.

What Happened...

Drove home 30mi on the freeway and sat chatting in the car with the heater on for sometime and then went inside and when I came out a few hours later, it wouldn't start, just cranks over and seems like it sounded like an air conditioner (kshhhhhh) lol. (and I can hear the fuel pump engage when I turn the ignition on.)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now I am interested in getting it going again. so...

What should I expect to pay a mechanic to remove the old engine and install a replacement?

What should I expect to pay for a Donor Engine from a yard?

How Much should I expect to pay for a rebuild? (& how should I go about it?)

And since I'm not sure what they checked, could the problem be something simple like a timing belt?

Thanks (and I'm in a rural area cost wise)

I'd buy a newer car. You'll spend more money fixing it, than you'd pay out on another running car.
Remember, it's just a car. Don't get all sappy now. just part it out and get something else.

Dealerships are called 'Stealerships' for a good reason....DON'T GO THERE. You must be able to find (if you don't have one already) an on-line Board for Escorts, find a cheap engine and do a swap for about $1,000. At least there you'll get good advise...and it'll be a good place to part out the car if that's the way you go.

Good luck
