I am entering into my last year as an undergrad at a small, private liberal arts school in upstate New York. My major is biology and my minor is Japanese, and because my school doesn't offer them, I've never taken a photography class in my life. However, over the past few years I've developed a keen interest in photography and I have come extremely far since I started actually learning photography on my own.
I think I also want to teach English outside of the States at some point, and I'm quite interested in languages. Some other options I'm considering are going to grad school to get my TEFL Certificate for a year, and not going to grad school at all but rather take a certification class and also possibly a photography class online. The reason I'm leaning more toward actually going to grad school is that right now, since my parents had to pay for my college, I don't have any loans to pay back yet, so getting one out to use for grad school is something I'm okay with, and also I want access to photographic tools that actually physically attending a photography school would bring me. Also, the prestige I gain from attending a reputable grad school will help in the future. I'm looking for advice here specifically from people that have gone to school (at any level) for photography.
Lastly, since I've never taken a photo class, I know nothing about creating a portfolio. There are lots of tutorials online, but how do I go about creating the photos? Should I write down techniques that I want to use and go out and take photos specifically for use in my portfolio, or can I just choose from the photos I have already?
Thanks!
