Should I go to a doctor ASAP?

Instead of going to a non emergency clinic and possibly flushing $200 down the toilet, I see what I can find out from the resident medical experts.

I slammed the lower part of my leg below the knee on a wooden dresser. I don't think I have ever hit my leg that hard when not playing a sport.

It swelled to the size of a golf ball within 5 minutes. There was a cut, but no blood dripping out of it.

The swelling has mostly gone away, but the cut looks kind of nasty. It doesn't look that deep, but it is wide. Maybe a quarter inch. The length is a little over an inch. Since there never was any blood flowing out of it, it makes me feel I don't need stiches. But the width of it concerns me.

If I do possibly need stitches, what is the longest I can wait without risking infection?

Alright, here is an update. I may have a more serious issue.

I got up to go to the bathroom. Minor pain when I walk. After I get back to my bed, the area begins throbbing in pain. It feels like "something is broken" pain. It is only getting worse as time goes on which might be normal for something like this before it heals. The swelling is the same as when I went bed. No bruising.

I don't know how bad the pain can be without something serious being wrong.
