Should I go for an iPhone or an iPod touch?

for my 18th my dad said he'd get me either an iPod touch or an iPhone, but then he told em that if I lose my iPhone that it is BAD TIMES and also, on an iPod touch you can apparantly download an app so that you can use things like skype and make internet calls, which would be cheaper than getting an iPhone to make calls. He also said the contract for iPhones was dead expensive. But I want to know what you think, which one? what are the pros and cons of each? do you have an iPhone?
