Should I get the Apple IPhone 3GS?

I stopped in the AT & T store and they have the Apple IPhone 3GS available at a good price right now. I am afraid of getting the IPone 4 with all the bad press about the reception problem. Is the IPhone 3GS still good to buy or is it outdated now. It is still currently offered but I don't know anything about it. I am new to smartphones. I want the phone for making calls, email, web browsing, occasional texting, good downloading speed etc. Any suggestions about this phone appreciated. Any good reviews I should look at before I buy it? Also what case should I get for it.. Thank you
