Should I get Macbook or iMac.?

I'm a junior in High School I currentlyy use a 2006 Dell desktop computer.My dad told me I could get a new computer because the Dell has basically crashed beyond repair.I can't decide between a imac or a macbook.Which one would be better and possibley last longer.Oh and I know that HP just came out with their touchsmart computer and Apple is working on a touch version of the imac any ideas on when it comes out?
