Should I get a lawyer to lower the bill?

I accidentally threw out a piece of equipment that I'm being told is worth 1,100.00 dollars. The item that was tossed was a real piece of crap, had to be taped together and held just right for it to even work properly. (was a headset for a fast-food place) Clearly not worth the amount they are charging me for it. I was told that I have one week to come up with the money or it will be taken to the police. I'm on video throwing the headset, not in the trash but in that general area... That's just where it landed. I don't have one grand just on hand for things like this.. Would there be any way to get them to lower the price? Would I go to jail if I can't make the payment? If I got a lawyer would that make even a difference?
And, what kind of lawyer should I even be looking to get? Would this be stealing or destroying property?
