I'm staying in a dorm right now and it gets really cold in here, for me anyways. I have my betta fish in my dorm room and his tank looks like this http://source-www.petco.com/assets/product_images/0/015561134033B.jpg and its half a gallon. I was thinking about getting a heater because I think the water gets cold but I don't know if a heater is appropriate for the size of the tank and I dont know which heater to get. Any help?

Bettas need heaters. I would suggest you find a bigger home for him (half a gallon is rather small). He should have 3-5 gallons all to himself, with a light and a heater. The water needs to stay 76-80 degrees.

ok here is something you should consider:

Because half gal is too small to heat. It comes with a filter so All you have to do is buy a heater for the tank and cycle it then your betta will be SUPER happy! good luck!

(if thats too expensive when you buy the filter tank hood seperatley it can cost less)

tank probably too small for a heater if your dorm room stays between 75 and 82 degrees the tank will remain the same if lower go to l f s ask whats available for your tank they will be glad to make suggestions

Yes, because Betta's are tropical fish, not cold water fish. Only cold water fish should not have heaters otherwise they would literally boil to death. Betta's come from an environment where they live in warm water and they are breed in warm water, so therefore they need to live in warm water. They aren't very adaptable fish and despite what people say, they aren't very tolerant to bad water conditions. People will say otherwise, but they either don't keep Betta's so they don't really know, or they have kept Betta's and they haven't lived that long (meaning less then 5 years). You also must have a filter, all fish must have filters otherwise any toxin or chemicals that get into your tank through the air are likely to kill the fish. Another thing I will mention is that no fish can live in half a gallon of water, it's not enough water for them to swim in, and there will not be enough water for them to get oxygen from. Betta's need a minimum of 5 gallons as they get to be 3-4 inches at adult size, therefore they need approx one gallon of water per one inch of adult fish. It may look like the fish is fine in less the 5 gallons, but they can't talk for you to ask them! It would be the same as an elephant living in your bathroom, a little cruel yeah?

i have 3 betttas myself and i think urs will be fine. I know a lot of peole say it needs a rather large tank all to itself but i think urs will be fine. Just remember to change its water frequently and give it lots of love!
if it gets really cold as u say then maybe leave a small light over it which will raise the temp. of the water just enough.
