Should i eat before my workout or not?

I am mainly trying to lose body fat, but also build some muscle to a smaller extent. I usually do 40 minutes of cardio and then 5 sets of increasing weights on diffrent muscles on different days but cardio always. Some people say you should eat a little something before you run or your metabolism won't get going and your body goes into survival mode n burns less fat. Others say if you eat before working out you only burn the calories you just ate. What should i do to lose the most weight, eat before or not?
