Should I count calories or eat until I'm full when building muscle?

My friend, who is also a body builder told me to not count calories and eat until I'm full when trying to build muscle and eat lots of protien since everyone's body is different. So is this true because I want to build muscle by weight lifting I already lost 75 pounds by cardio and a 1500 calorie diet. So will what he is saying work and will not get me fat since I'm excercising 5-6 days a week, 30min-1.5 a day and I'm planning to cut down on cardio to 2-3 days a week since I'm doing it 6 days a week right now but he told me its too much. So will this work and not make me gain the fat I lost back? Btw I know I'm going to gain weight but I don't want to gain too much fat. I'm 5'2 123 pounds right now. So will this work?
