I am fifteen. About a month ago my girlfriend and I stole some stuff from my dad and got a friend to pawn it. One thing was a watch that had belonged to my grandfather. We got about $350 for it.
Yesterday my dad discovered it was missing and immediately blamed my brother because he has been known to steal before. He is seventeen. He demanded a confession and when he didn't get one he belted him.
When I got home last night my brother told me what happened and showed me the welts on his back. Apparently he has one week to get the stuff back or he will be beat worse. I said I would tell my dad the truth. He said not to tell my dad just to get the stuff. He said he already took the punishment and there is no need for me to be whipped also.
I feel really terrible. That stuff was apparently really important to my dad, one of the few things his father left him when he died.
I think I can get enough money to get the stuff back and give it to my brother to give to my dad. But what if he beats him again anyway? I feel like I should tell my dad the truth and accept my punishment. How should I go about doing that? I don't want to get whipped but this is all my fault.
