Should I buy this

It seems like a good deal, and it's definitely in my budget (I will just skip the Wii for now). If I do, what cable will I need to get the PS3 audio to play surround if I use the HDMI output from the receiver. Since it's passthrough, do I just buy a digital optical cable thing? Will that work? (I know the PS3 was having troubles with certain audio configs and I don't want to buy this if I will run into that.)

for that you WILL need a digital optical cable. The HDMI only passes video. Also it does not upconvert the component and composite signals.
 
Ha, oh yeah good call. I would prefer Onkyo, so that looks good.


I like that one too, but for now it's a but out of my price range. That's why I was considering holding off for a few months, but I have all my stuff in a fairly small room in my apt. so I figure I don't need a really powerful system, I just want surround for my gaming/movies. I'm looking for sound precision over power. Will that other Onkyo HTIB give me that? HDMI passes audio...


I have a samsung plasma HDTV, and a upvert DVD player... going HDMI from the DVD player to the TV (along with a optical fro m DVD to receiver).

If I turn off the receiver, I have sound thru the TV still.
