Should I buy a hybrid bike or a mountain bike?

I foolishly bought a Marin Muirwoods 17" hybrid bike. After 4 miles or so on it, I would be very uncomfortable (tired, out of breath, shoulder pain). But when I ride my boyfriend's bike, a 4300 Trek 19.5" hardtail, I can ride for 25+ miles without being sore or uncomfortable. His bike is slightly too big for me because I have to lean too far foward, but overall his bike is much more comfortable.

Is there a big difference between hybrid bikes and mountain bikes? Is the geometry greatly different? It seems like the hybrid would suit by riding style more (trails and sidewalks) but my last hybrid was SO uncomfortable. Any advice?

I owned a Marin San Anselmo, and regard it as being about the best bike I've owned!

What is nearly key is sizing, also when is the last time the Muirwoods had a tuneup. A bike that fits U and is properly tuned is essential.

All the best!!
