I have never owned or ridden a motorcylce before and I just signed up to get my motorcycle license and see if I like it. I really want a Sportster 883L or a Nightster. Is this a good bike to start on or should I try something with a little less power? Tell me I don't really know much about bikes. I like the aesthetics of the Sportster. I DO NOT want a crotch rocket

the Sportster 883 is a good entry level H-D ,the newer models starting in 07 now has electronic fuel injection rather then a carb I currently have the 07 883L and haven't had any problems with mine, there is a lot of aftermarket parts available for the Sportsters so you can customize it the way you like

too much power is not a problem...
1 can your feet reach the ground
2 see if you can ride some other bikes before buying...like HD but really love V twin yamahas....smoother,,faster...handle better....more dependable...better brakes,,,,

is what i have and ive enjoy mine been on it for 9 yrs now over 75,000 miles beed across country four times easy coast west coast.. you ride what you like so after you have sat on one or two you should know what you want or if it feels right

My first bike was an '07 883L HD Sportster.
Good first bike, but I outgrew it very quickly.
The sportster is a reliable machine. I've pounded the s*it out of my bike and it kept going. Plus the resale value will be good, when you decided to trade up.
Very fun to ride.

No. For your first bike get something used and cheap. You are gonna put some dings in it your first year. get some experience on it and put away a few bucks, then get your Sportster.

273...you're a fn idiot.
kelly f....use spell check, you're the reason it's there.
to answer your question, the 883 is a good choice if you have any experience at all,it's pretty sluggish stock, which is a good thing if you're just starting out, after a year of riding, install the big bore kit, mine is a 1250 cc now,it is not top heavy, and the only time mine wobbles is when im laughing too hard at the squids on thier CROTCH ROCKETS.
after you install the big bore kit,you can still keep it registered and insured as a 883,saving money on the insurance costs, with the sniper-made garbage, you cant do that.

Look around. The Honda Shadow 750 has plenty of power and is very comfortable. Off the showroom floor the Aero Edition of it was exactly what fit me. The seat was wider and the bars swept back farther that the Spirit Edition. I went and looked at the 883L, but the whole thing looked out of balance to me. I'd have to buy a new seat and bars just to get in the market with Honda. Yamaha makes a sharp bike in the V Star. And Suzuki has a bike that sits real nice. For a new rider I suggest a used Honda VLX or something like that.

Have fun whatever you choose! Just remember the people in cars out there are trying to kill you!

883 is a good learner bike. my mom has a speical edition 91 883 and its fairly light. we have had it since 2000 and my mom doesnt want a new one she loves it. which the pearl white paint is suppose to be rare. if your going to be riding much i would prob look at the 1200 series. at first it might seem big but once you get used to riding you will want something bigger
