I'm a photojournalism student. I am either going to buy a flash or a battery grip. I might be able to swing both if a flash is quite necessary, but I'm leaning toward to grip now. Thoughts?
Get the battery grip. You NEVER want to run out of power when shooting an assignment. If necessary, you can always use the on-board flash, but in most press assignments, flash is rarely necessary.
Check with Canon and see how many shots you can expect from your camera and battery grip. I can get nearly 2000 shots using my D300 with D10 grip.
Later you can buy a Canon 430EX II if you find yourself assigned to shoot "events".
