should i become the boss of a law firm in a tiny town or remain as a junior lawyer

It depends on what type of individual you are. Why did you go to law school? To help others, to right wrongs or to have a healthy salary? What are your motivations? I personally would go to the tiny town as they are probably in more of a need of good counsel than a big city, where there are too many attorneys. One on each corner. And for the record, it is not because of the money for me. People in small towns have legal problems also, just like everybody else. But most attorneys go for the big bucks and settle into the big city and leave the small towns to fend for themselves. The money would be nice, but more important, you would be kind of a hero to help people with their problems and that would be super, more rewarding than the salary. At least for me. You have to decide what type of person you are.

You need to be aware of the fact that as the boss, you're responsible to make sure paying clients come in the door. If you can't do that, stay junior.

It has nothing to do with anything else but that. As the boss, you can suck as a lawyer if you can hire good people to do the actual work, but you really don't need to know anything about Law if you don't have any clients.

Do NOT be tempted to take over a practice with existing clients, brought in by employees. Once those employees figure out that attracting business is the most important piece of a business, they'll leave your firm and take the clients with them.

If you can't attract clients, stay where you can do the work for someone who can bring it through the door.

First and foremost depends on your self confidence. (can you do it?) If you know the answer to that then you have to decide if you want the "resume" (big firm, big town) or you want the money? Most people want the "resume" so they can get more money, so skip the "resume" and get the money now. After all, it's not like you aren't still building your resume in the mean time. I assume if "moving' was an issue for you then you wouldn't have posted your question here. So, be confident, and attack success when it wanders past.
