I have read accounts of gays that were heroic in carrying out their duties.

The flaw in your premise is there are gays in the military and the units do have cohesion.

your premise is a red herring.
 
i do not think so because unit cohesion is one of the most importaint elements in the military and anything that undermines it severly disables its fighting capibilities. race and gender are also included. the way the unit acts when goofing off is similar to the cohesion they have during combat. if one individual is singled out, they will not be trusted in combat by there piers.
