Should Garden Leave be paid tax free?

I worked for a company from Jan 11 to June 12, and upon handing in my notice, was told not to work my notice period as I was going to a competing insurance broker. I was told I would still be paid in the normal fashion. They did however take away my company car and company phone as apparently if not being used for business purposes, I would have no use for them in the remaining weeks I was still employed.

I wasn't at all convinced about the removal of these benefits, though I decided it really wasn't worth arguing over as I couldn't wait to leave anyway!

Now I have since had various sources telling me that, if I did NOT work my notice period then this final part of my employment should not be taxed in the normal way - however I was taxed.

Can anyone tell me - should I have been paid tax free or not?

Thanks
