Should British Police be armed? I think so?

The Cumbria massacre (last week) could have been avoided it has been revealed as three police saw him shoot his fellow taxi drivers, but as they were not armed, there wasn't much they could do without committing suicide! He then went on to kill 9 more!
I think it is ridiculous that people have guns in the UK, but the cops do not!
Opinions?
