The quote below makes me very sad
"I’m saddened by the insanity that seems to fill a lot of comments here. Especially by the ridiculous statement “The fears we women have, that men don’t have, mostly come from generations of being told to be fearful.” I guess not being a pervert who enjoys fantasies of being raped, tortured and murdered in the forest makes one a freak with silly fears?
I’m also kind of angered that some people suggest using Safety/911 notification devices. WHO’S GOING TO PICK THE TAB FOR YOUR RESCUE? TAXPAYERS? You certainly don’t intend to pay, right? You know how much ambulance cost, right? Now multiply that many times and BETTER BE READY TO PAY IT (why do I have a feeling that’s it’s mostly middle-class white people posting here who think the world’s their personal playground?) Should the government just print more dollar bills to accommodate your dangerous (and reckless) activities?
I’m not paying for your rescue. You wanna be catfood for cougars or beat-meat for a maniac?–please just don’t tap into my taxes to rescue you and DON’T ENDANGER RESCUE PERSONNEL (like recently, in AZ, a dumb idiot woman got lost and–guess what?–a rescue officer DIED trying to safe her worthless dumb a$$). Just go die alone if you want to hike alone, don’t call 911 or count on it. And that mountain lion will surely enjoy eating you much more if it knows–Oh noes!–you just called some 911 center hell knows where and helicopters are coming real soon.
So, ladies, what are you going to do if you encounter a rapist/murderer/sicko on that trail alone? Fight back? Sorry, you can’t do much against 6+ feet-tall pile of muscle and testosterone. Your “knife” or “pepper spray” will just come handy for the rapist to use against you. (even a gun, if the attack is sudden enough-which is easy to accomplish when you’re passing someone on a narrow trail). If you’re walking on that lonely trail, what are ya going to do if u run into a perv? Lay back and enjoy it? Wait for “helicopters” and “officers”?
Here, in California and NW in general, cougars had even attacked groups of 2, not to mention numerous murders that happened to groups of 2. That’s why I don’t hike in groups of 2. I agree that the rule of 4 should apply–if one is hurt or sick, 2 stay on trail, and 2 go to find help.
I witnessed sickos harassing adult hikers since back when I was a kid, on more than once occasion, had been harassed myself, had also been assaulted while living in large cities (I’m NYC-LA-SF-London resident, sort of). In a city, there’s at least a chance of a criminal being deterred by other people or even cops, and a short distance to run to help/safety, but on trail… you’re theirs to do whatever they want to do with you, and some of them like to see you feel the pain (before you die). I’m 5’8?, athletic, lift weights, very strong, but hell I’d never go even in a group of 2, not to mention by myself–cause I know if sh$t hits the fan, there’s a little chance to be saved. Here, in Cal, btw, cougars jumped people during the day time many times, it’s a kill machine and you won’t know it’s coming for you, thank you very much, I can live without that. There’re plenty of hiking groups to use."
