Shorter travel fork on mountain bike?

I have a Mongoose Teocali Comp, with 140mm travel. I recently put on an older 125mm travel fork because I got a good deal and hey, it's a Fox TALAS. Is this okay? How will it affect performance and durability?

Lets say you have this bike here: http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1027088_-1_24500_20000_28504. Sure you already did it but what for. Nothing wrong with the Suntour fork you had....Ride the hell out of it until it gives out then you take that great deal on a 125mm travel Fox fork and put it on then. In the meantime you have a perfectly good Suntour fork waiting for the day that the seals finally give out on a USED Fox fork and will have to revert back to the Suntour fork. Either way here you are playing a game of chance. whats to say the Fox doesn't give out on you tomorrow, then you are back at square one anyway. I would probably ride the hell out of the Fox since its already installed and hope for the best. A whole 15mm of less travel will likely not make much difference in steering. One thing you should do with this bike if you feel the need to spend $ is to upgrade the wheels on it, even an 09' model. This will make the biggest difference on how the bike performs and what you can do with it. Shortening the fork travel is not the ideal way to go. Money could have been spent better on Wheels.
