Short-term US phone for student from Spain

I'm trying to help a student who's visiting my lab find a phone to use for the summer. He's from Madrid and says that Movistar (Telefonica) told him his prepaid phone would hop onto Cingular's network over here, but it hasn't. He wants to pick up a phone to use over here, but only so he can be reached- he doesn't need to make a lot of calls. Ideally, he says, he'd like to get a prepaid phone over here that he can take back to Spain to use with his current SIM, there, in the fall. Does anyone know the specs of the Movistar network, or where I can find a list of phones that will also work there?

His phone is probably only 900/1800MHz which is why it won't work in the States (those are the frequency bands that Movistar uses). That or are you somewhere that relies on 850MHz? Either way, you're better off looking for an unlocked phone and then buying a prepaid plan separately. Prepaid phones are locked to the provider they originated from so if he gets a prepaid phone from Cingular it won't work with his Movistar SIM. I can't provide a full list, but just look for a quadband or Euro-triband phone.
