Short lead sinks back into mechanical pencil?

When the lead gets real short and you click and click and it comes out but then sinks back up into the pencil cause it's too short to stay in place and then you have to shake and shake the pencil till the lead pokes out just enough until you can grab the lead and throw it away staining your hand in the process and then you have to start all over again with a new piece of lead. Is there anyway to use up that small piece of lead?
 
you can collect such leads and then place them in a small quantity of water (half a cup) for a few days to get royal blue ink...
