When walking, I have had a severe shooting pain from lower back down the back of my legs for about a month. I cannot lie on my back and lift my legs without severe pain....I have to "roll over" to get up from this position. Not sure of cause, but I have tried cutting back on workouts to no avail. Looking for some suggestions for remedy.

I have done some more research and I think I might have something called "runners syndrome" (?) with the piriformis muscle. I'm going to try McKenzie exercises and see if I can't get past the pain once again. Anyone heard of these exercises? Results? Thanks for input!

The McKenzie method used to be the "gold standard" for back pain, and still is among some physical therapists. For the most part, it cn't hurt to try the exercises for awhile. Even when one has a situation that requires surgery, doctors almost always try PT first, so I doubt you will do harm to yourself. Depending on how much pain you had, you might want to try rest for a couple days...then gently start the McKenzie exercises, proceeding cautiously. If an exercise hurts, you should immediately stop doing it...stay off it a couple days, and then try it again.

I've been off for 10 days and have seen only minute difference in pain releif....still shooting "darts" when I walk, move around....ibuprofen not doing much to ease pain either. Doing any kind of exercises is painful, but always in pain, so thought I'd give it a try. Thanks for the tips.

Hi, it sounRAB to me, too, like it might be sciatica. Problem is you don't know what is causing it. It could be piriformis syndrome or a disc problem or something else compressing one or more nerves. Have you seen a doctor at all? It would probably best to have an MRI done to see if a problem can be found. IF so, then you can go to a physical therapist and they give you the proper exercises for your problem. And if that doesn't help, there are many other options to try.

Thanks for all the input...guess I'll make appt. and see if I can find out just exactly what's causing problem.
