My son was diagnosed with Sheumerman's kyphosis after having back pain due to several four wheeler accidents. His ortho wants to follow him for a while and let him do physical therapy to see if it will help. I am going to get a second opinion with another ortho, just to compare. Has anyone's child had this? If so, was surgery necessary? The ortho said if his pain gets unbearable, he will do surgery to correct it. Any opinions?

What kind of ortho was this one? with that diagnosis.. your child really should be seen by a pediatric ortho that only does spines.

A second opinion is highly recommended.

I would imagine that depending on the person/child, the amount of pain, the structural issues, would greatly depend if surgery was necessary.

My children are now grown and do not have spine issues to this point.

Please keep us posted.

Thanks for responding. The ortho that we saw was a highly reputable and skilled pediatric ortho. I really trust his judgement, however I do like second opinions. We have a Shriners Hospital close to us, and are thinking about getting a second opinion from them. My son has a pretty bad huncrabroadack right now. He can't sit up straight without his back hurting, and complains a lot about it when he tries to do much physical stuff. I'm not sure that watching it for a few years is the best option. Of course, the physical therapy twice a week should help. I personally think surgery might be the best option for my son, because even though he takes therapy, he's not motivated enough to do his home therapy without us nagging him and making him do it everyday. At least with the surgery, I know it would be fixed, and we wouldn't have to worry about it anymore. The older he gets, the more pronounced the huncrabroadack gets in him, so I wonder if it will only keep getting worse.
